The key to success in any label application is to test the face material and adhesive before ordering. That's because the performance of adhesives is dependent on three measurable factors:
- tack-how well an adhesive will stick to a surface on first contact;
- specific adhesion-an adhesive's ability to stick/adhere to a surface after it's fully set; and
- cohesiveness-the internal strength of an adhesive.
Permanent or Removable?
The biggest decision upfront is if you need a permanent or removable label. Both types are designed for application in temperatures between 55 to room temperature.
Acrylic and Rubber-Based Adhesives
Acrylic adhesives are primarily composed of synthetic polymers, which are inherently sensitive to pressure. Rubber based adhesives are primarily composed of synthetic or natural rubber. Both adhesives have other components that can be added to modify the pressure sensitivity.

Adhesive Performance Factors
Successful adhesive performance depends on:
- composition of the substrate
- texture
- shape
- cleanliness
- temperature at application
- environmental conditions
- expected life of label
Thorough testing is always recommended to assure the correct label stock and adhesive selection.
