LAID
A type of finish with a lined appearance.
LASER PRINTING
Also known as electro-photographic printing, a process where light
creates a static charge on a photographically-sensitive cylinder.
The charged cylinder attracts toner, which is subsequently transferred
to a printable surface, creating an image.
LATEX SEAL
Used in place of gum on self-seal envelopes. We refer to this type
of seal as a Pres-Stick® seal. A Pres-Stick® (latex seal)
requires two areas of application, because it will only adhere to
itself. The flap seal and a mirror image on the back will seal the
envelope securely when the flap is closed.
LAYOUT (ENVELOPE DIE CUTTING)
The drawn pattern of envelope blanks on a particular sheet size
that is used as a guide for printing and cutting envelopes.
LETTERPRESS
A printing method where oil-based ink is applied via rollers to
a raised plate, and then the image is directly impressed onto the
paper. Similar to flexographic printing, letterpress uses screens
of 65 to 85 lines.
LINE ART
Black and white artwork that can be reproduced as is.
LIP
A folded envelope with no top score and a short seal flap. See also
Extension Flap.
LITHO
The printing process which uses a blanket for transferring the image
from plate to paper (see Lithography and Offset Printing).
LITHOGRAPHY
A high-speed planographic printing process where an image is photo-engraved
on a flat plate, chemicals are applied to keep water on the non-print
part of the plate, and oil-based inks are applied to the image areas
of the plate. The ink is then offset to a blanket, and then to the
paper.
